Building a deck for salt air, not just for looks
A deck a mile from the ocean fails differently than a deck inland, and the failure usually starts underneath, not on the surface you can see. Salt air works on fasteners and on the ledger board, the piece that ties the deck to the house, faster than it works on the decking boards on top. That's why ledger attachment and flashing get more attention on this job than almost anything else: a ledger that's improperly flashed lets water behind it, and that's the single most common way a deck actually comes apart at a shore address. Material choice follows from the same fact. Fasteners, hardware and framing get chosen for a house near water, not for the lowest price on a supply list, because the wrong hardware corrodes years before the boards on top show any wear at all.
Railing height and spacing aren't up to preference
Expect railing height and the gaps between balusters to be code items on this job, not a style choice you and we negotiate.
